Davina Whiteman retires from the helm of Ponies Association (UK) Posted: Feb 2017

Ponies Association (UK) is moving into the future with a new team at the helm.

Davina Whiteman has, after being the Chairman of the association for many years and taking and bringing her mother’s –Joan Lee-Smith – vision of the future of showing to fruition, which included the education of the horse / pony owners to improve the welfare of all our equines, including our wonderful native breeds, decided that she wishes to step back and start a new chapter in her life.

The horse and pony world has a huge debt to Davina who has worked tirelessly.  The new board of Ponies Association (UK) wish Davina the very best in the new chapter of her life.

The new board of directors is led by Julie Templeton as the interim Chairperson, and Helen Turner as the Vice.  These two ladies have a wealth of experience behind them and along with other members of the board are excited by future developments.

An invitation is extended to past and present members to join with us in thanking Davina for all she has done for the Association.

It is proposed that an open meeting for all members , past, present and future is to be held during the Winter Championships at Bury Farm, Buckinghamshire , 24,25,26th March.  More information will be published.

Exciting Changes for P(UK) for 2014 Posted: Wed 6 Nov
The phasing in of a new schedule of memberships and affiliations commencing in 2012 continues. The Board of Directors and Council continue to restructure the Association ready to face the challenges and demands of the modern Showing Industry.

The enthusiasm and support from members of the new location at Stoneleigh Park was encouraging, the 2014 show will be branded The P (UK) Supreme Championships on 8th August to 10th August 2014 at Stoneleigh Park.

The statistics over the last three years have shown a continual shrinkage of the Winter Affiliated Circuit. Council have responded by taking the decision to allow animals who have been placed 1st 2nd or 3rd in a P(UK) affiliated class between 1st March 2013 to 28th February 2014 to compete in the equivalent National Championship in the Winter Schedule.

The Show will be branded the P(UK) Winter Classic at Bury Farm Slapton Bucks on the 29th and 30th March 2014 and will include RIHS qualifiers for Amateurs, Cobs, Maxi's, Hunters, Hacks, Riding Horses, Coloureds, Working Hunters and the Dalkeith Young Riders Ridden M&Ms.

A real opportunity to get the early press and promotion for the season.

The final phase of Membership change will commence on January 1st 2014 to December 31st 2014. Members completing their 2014 membership before 1st March 2014 will receive a free £25 national championship entry voucher redeemable before 1st September 2014 for postal entries.

The very sad decision not to offer a 2014 Lee-Smith Membership for the Home Produced classification was reluctantly taken. The association led the way for this group in the late nineties but again figures over the past three years have shown a decline as members focus on other finals. However we we still be offering home produced classes to those who are eligible.

The final phase of restructure for affiliations will commence on 1st March 2014 with the annual series to run throughout the year, allowing members to qualify for two shows if they so wish at one event.

We will continue to listen to all your views and respond in the most appropriate way, so do not hesitate to mail me on

The office will only be open between 8.30a.m. to 1 p.m. for the remainder of the year commencing 30th October for holidays to be taken.

Ponies (UK) Amateur M&M Riders head to RIHS 2014! Posted: Tues 8 Oct

Details of the RIHS P(UK) M&M Dalkeith and the P(UK)M&M Amateur Riders Qualifiers will be announced at the end of November 2013. Good Luck everyone at HOYS, keep P(UK) Ponies facebook page up to speed with your results and photos so we can see how you are enjoying your day.

P(UK) Judges Stewards Members & Non-Members Conference on September 29th 2013 Posted: Tues 1 Oct

The conference for PUK judges, stewards, members and NPS judges was held on Sunday 29th September 2013 at The British Horse Society, Kenilworth. This was well supported and enjoyed by all, with the main them being The Evening Performance.

The panel consisted of Davina Whiteman – Debbie Spears - Sarah Veale and Robert Walker. Davina's talk on the role of administrating and the actual running of an evening event was very informative. Her depth of knowledge relating to producing, and competing made for extremely interesting listening. Debbie Spears gave everyone an insight into the judging and preparation of Mountain & Moorland classes Sarah Veale who with her family has competed over the years was very much in favour of highlighting the evening performance as being very special for all newcomers. We were very fortunate in having Robert Walker give some very sound advice. He emphasised how important it was particularly for young horses to gain confidence by preparing them continually throughout the year for the eventual evening performance. He explained how correct dress for the show ring was equally significant for the overall picture.

No doubt all those who attended would have gained some ideas to add to their preparation for the 2014 season.

Ponies UK Summer Championships Press Release 2013 Posted: Fri 23 August
With over 2160 minutes of showing completed over 3 days at Stoneleigh Park the Ponies UK Summer Championships has drawn to a close for another year. The decision to move to Stoneleigh for the 2013 championship show has been met with unanimous support from members, judges and sponsors alike.

After three days of high quality competition, it was one of the smallest competitors of the show riding the superb little Dartmoor Hisley Carnival that rode away with the supreme of show title. Hisley Carnival owned and home produced by the Drake Family was beautifully ridden by 8 year old Annabel Drake to not only be crowned the supreme of show but also head the Lee Smith Supreme Champion of Champions and Lee Smith Lobster Pot M&M Lead Rein sections. Led by mother Sarah, the seven year old Dartmoor gelding out of Hisley Carinda has exceeded all expectations for the home produced family, having previously qualified for HOYS and RIHS however this win provided them with their first Ponies UK Summer Championships Supreme title.

Mountain and Moorland classes were extremely well supported but it was seasoned champion Chilham Aquarius and Lauren Campion who continued their recent RIHS Supreme Home Produced Championship success to head the Kingsford Ridden Mountain and Moorland sections. The HOYS qualified 8year old gelding completed the weekend by standing Lee Smith Reserve supreme of show.

Both the Kingsford Ridden Mountain and Moorland Championship and Amateur Riders Summer Championship provided competitors with the opportunity to compete for a £1000 prize fund in their respective championships. Ponies UK would like to express their sincere gratitude to the Mr & Mrs Martin Wood and Family for their very generous support of such fiercely contested Summer Championships.

Amateur riders produced some very polished performances but it was Jonathan Stevens riding the very successful Littletree Limited Edition who took home the top prize and Amateur riders title for 2013. Jonathan, a full time dentistry student at university was thrilled to win such a valuable cash prize on a pony also called forward as HOYS M&M Ridden Champion earlier on in the weekend.

Qualification for the HOYS Cuddy Supreme In-hand championship drew some exquisite entries however it was the incredibly elegant Elusive who triumphed for The Welby family. Shown with the trademark brilliance of Simon Charlesworth, the black three year old has gained admirable praise throughout the season with championships at both Devon county and Midland Counties this term. Advancing through from the hack section originally judged at 8am in the morning, Elusive rose to the occasion in style to collect the Coronation Cup prior to the Cuddy accolade.

Owner of Elusive Suzanna Welby summarised the move to Stoneleigh in a very apt manner for all 'We could not have enjoyed our day at the Summer Championships more and absolutely love the new venue. Everything was beautifully and thoughtfully organised. The evening performance had a magical atmosphere and we were so excited to be part of it.'

Dalkeith Young Riders M&M Ridden Final – Royal International 2013 Posted: Wed 1 August
Ponies UK would like to congratulate all our competitors in The Dalkeith Young Riders M&M Ridden Final at Royal International 2013. Special congratulations to our champion Thistledown Levius owned by Lisa Turner and ridden by Brooke Vincent. This combination put on a fantastic display in the International Arena. The associations National President Mrs P Campbell was extremely delighted to present this superb Welsh Sec A with the Championship prize. We hope you had an enjoyable day and look forward to seeing you at our Summer Championships 2013.
